Wadewitz was a brickmaker before becoming a trunkmaker.

South Side Historic District Walking Tour Guide: "The rear section of this dignified cream brick house was built about 1854 by Balthasar and Katherine Kissinger. Mr. Kissinger was a grocer in downtown Racine in the 1850s and the 1860s. After he died Katherine married John Wadewitz, who was then the owner of three brickyards in and around the city. In 1884 the front section was built-undoubtedly of brick from one of the Wadewitz yards. With his two sons, Theodore and Herman, Mr. Wadewitz later established the Racine Trunk Company, which manufactured luggage in the city from the 1880s to the 1940s. Katherine died in 1888 and John lived here until his own death in 1920. The house remained in the family until the 1960s."
