It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. STILTED SEGMENTAL ARCHED WINDOWS AND DOOR ON FRONT. DENTICULATED CORNICE. RESTORED CA 1987. In use as a firehouse until 1868. NOW A MUSEUM. COMPANY NO. 3 WAS ONE OF TWO VOLUNTEER COMPANIES FORMED IN 1849 TO INCREASE FIRE PROTECTION. ENGINE COMPANY NO.3 WAS COMPOSED ALMOST ENTIRELY OF WELSH IMMIGRANT. THEY MOVED INTO THIS FIREHOUSE IN 1881. "Engine House No. 3, located at 700 Sixth Street, is significant as the City of Racine's official Bicentennial project. Several alterations were made to this building over the years, but the building has been partially restored and is used as a firefighters' museum. Though the site was purchased for $1,000 in late 1869, the City of Racine delayed construction for several years. #3 Company, one of Racine's oldest fire companies, unsuccessfully sought a new building for ten years. Alderman Lucius Blake was able to maneuver the Common Council into approving plans in early 1881, though in May of 1881, the Common Council changed its mind and accepted the plans of David R. Jones & Co. of Madison. After several delays, construction began and the new Engine House No. 3 was completed by December 1, 1881. Engine House No. 3 remained in service until 1968." Robert D.
