LARGE SQUARE ENTRY TOWER. 2009- Bethesda Lutheran Church, constructed in 1898, is a side-gabled building with a front-facing transept gable and a prominent square corner tower. The church is clad in cream brick and is roofed in composite shingles. The main sanctuary is raised above street level, allowing room for eight segmental-arched windows at sidewalk level. Additional larger pointed-arch windows are present at the sanctuary level. The pointed-arch entry is recessed slightly into the base of the tower. Above, three tall pointed arches are present. The base of the tower is capped with a denticulated wooden cornice. A one-story square belfry is set atop the tower base. Originally, the belfry consisted of paired wooden pointed arches set into flat brick walls. The belfry was capped with a broad projecting cornice with wooden corbels and topped with a square pavilion roof. Currently, the belfry is covered in vinyl siding. The lower cornice has been removed, but the upper cornice is still present. -"STH 38 (State Street) Survey," WisDOT ID #2290-12-00, Prepared by Justin Miller and Jennifer R. Harvey (2009).
