Additional Information: | 2024: Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps indicate the two existing volumes at 315-317 S. Water Street (aka 315-317 Davidson) were previously one L-shaped building. The portion of the building that is visible from S. Water Street, the principal elevation and receding, was constructed in 1905. The extant and partially collapsed rear portion was constructed between 1910 and 1937. At some point after 1951, the rear portion of the earlier building was leaving the two extant disconnected buildings. The store and wagon shed building (113648), constructed in 1905, is a two-story, rectangular plan building that exhibits characteristics of a Commercial Vernacular style. It is of load bearing brick construction with brick belt courses at the height of the first and second floors. A corbelled brick belt course spans the height of the elevation between bartizan-like crenelations placed on either side of each corner. The roofline is finished with brick coping and a lobed parapet. The principal elevation is arranged into five bays. From the south, the first and fourth bays contain single entrances, of which, the first has been converted to a window opening. The second and third bays contain window openings for paired windows while the fifth bay contains a single window opening; although, all the windows have been replaced with glass block. The window and door openings are crowned with segmental arches and accentuated by elongated stone keystones. The windows are all replacement glass block windows. The store and wagon shed building (113648) may have been associated with the Milwaukee Malt & Grain Co. However, Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps indicate the company had been renamed or divested to Capitol Investment Co. by 1910, and at that time it was not in operation at that time. By the late 1920s, the former malt complex was divided amongst different ventures including Kellogg Seed Co. and Wisconsin Cold Storage Co. See HAER form. 2016 - resurveyed, windows infilled with glass block. Decorative brick parapet and cornice, arched windows with stone accents. Now functions as a bathhouse. |
