Additional Information: | 2009- The Racine Firehouse No. 2 was constructed in 1911. It is a flat-roofed, two story brick building with a square, four story shingled watchtower at the rear. The building has a corbelled brick cornice. At street level, a large pair of wooden carriage house doors are centered, with a stone lintel above bearing the inscription "R. F. D. 2." A smaller door and window are present on either side of the large door. Four tall two-over-two double hung windows are present in the second story. All windows have narrow stone sills and are capped with stone lintels. -"STH 38 (State Street) Survey," WisDOT ID #2290-12-00, Prepared by Justin Miller and Jennifer R. Harvey (2009). 3 STORY REAR TOWER,STONE LINTELS AND SILLS BRICKWORK CORNICE "Engine House No. 2, located at 1310 State Street (formerly numbered 1322 State Street), is an intact example of late Victorian Eclectic architecture. It is a relatively simple building distinguished by clean lines, nicely-detailed brickwork in the cornice and a striking, decoratively shingled four-story watchtower. Though often unnoticed, it possesses considerable architectural interest. The City of Racine purchased this site in late 1882 for $650., though the property was not used for twenty-nine years. On August 15, 1991 the Common Council approved a resolution calling for construction of a new firehouse on the property as a cost of $6,500. When it was completed, the Engine House No. 2 provided fire protection to the prosperous State Street businesses and the residential neighborhoods to the west and southwest of State Street."
