Siesel Construction Co. was the builder. Previously surveyed in 1984 with map code 149/30. Map name was 391. 2023: In 1967, Emory Clark, of Clark's Super Gas, purchased the former Greyhound Building (AHI #113836), as well as the eastern half of the adjoining block. The following year, in partnership with the Downtowner Corporation of Memphis, Tennessee, he constructed a 10-story motor inn. (From Clark's Super Gas Company Office [AHI #145304] Determination of Eligibility) 2025: The International-style Downtowner Motor Inn was constructed in 1968 by Emory Clark in partnership with the Downtowner Corporation of Memphis, Tennessee (Figure 14). The ten-story building has an irregular footprint consisting of the main block, a restaurant wing, and a parking garage. The main block has a concrete foundation, a combination of multi-colored red brick and modern paneling, and a parapeted flat roof. The primary façade features eight columns of paired vertical three-lite windows separated by wider columns, consisting of two columns of square panels each, with decorative red rosettes centered on the ninth floor panels. The tenth floor consists of a row of three-lite sliding windows. The front entrance is characterized by a slightly decentered, flat roof, porte cochere projecting from between the first and second stories. The roof is supported by brick and concrete posts resting on a concrete knee wall. The entrance consists of metal-framed glass double doors flanked by two sets of three plate glass windows on each side separated by concrete pilasters and resting on tiled bulkheads. The restaurant wing has an overhanging flat roof, exterior walls clad in multi-colored red brick with a concrete cornice, and a concrete foundation. Fenestration consists of paired or singly placed vertical fixed single-lite windows with wide concrete lintels and sills. The entrance to the restaurant wing is recessed on the northern façade. The parking garage wing has a flat roof that also serves as a parking level with a section at the northeast corner utilized as an outdoor patio. The north half of the eastern façade of the parking garage is clad in wide panels of multi-colored red brick veneer separated by narrow strips of concrete; the southern half is constructed of concrete panels with sections of decorative breeze blocks.
