Supposedly the first skeletal concrete building in Milwaukee. Builder: Concrete Contractors and N.W. Tile Co. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE: Excellent example of typical factory building of its period. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: First Skeleton concrete building (see above note). The George Ziegler Co. was established in 1861 as Boll Bros. Confectioners. Ziegler bought the company in 1873, building the present building in 1907. 1973: "One of the state's oldest and largest candy makers, the Ziegler Company has manufactured the locally popular "Giant" bar for many years. The George Ziegler Company building was the first skeleton concrete building in Milwaukee... Alterations and Additions (as of 1973): In 1919, a large seven story addition was erected adjacent to the older building. It was designed by the firm Brust and Philip, Milwaukee. Robert L. Reisinger and Co. was the contractor. Minor alterations were made to the buildings interior in 1942, 1959, and 1968. Exterior changes have been restricted to the first story, these being several loading platforms, doors and canopies. At an undetermined date, the first level of the south facade received new windows.
