Example of a 1920s apartment building; classicized ornament accents a large brick block. Milwaukee Sales and Investment Co. was the builder. Previously surveyed in 1983 with map code 99/30. Map name was 390. 2017 - This eight-story Neoclassical-style apartment building was designed by Martin Tullgren & Sons and constructed in 1924. The first two stories are clad in rusticated stone, while the upper stories are cream brick with stone and terracotta accents. Consistent with the Neoclassical style, the building exhibits symmetry throughout its design and is heavily adorned with classical details and motifs. The first floor of the building is a commercial space, with the entrance within a cutaway at the southeast corner. Large storefront windows are evenly spaced across the south and east elevations. Access to the upper floors is on the east elevation. The entrance is recessed within a plain granite surround. Windows on the upper stories of the building are one-over-one sashes arranged in regular intervals. The windows appear to be replacements, but are period appropriate. The corner bays of the building project slightly and have added ornamentation, including cable molding, spandrel panels, and balconets with brackets. Windows on the eighth story between the corner bays have round arches with keystones. The cornice consists of a continuous dentil course, while the parapet above features festoons and other classical motifs. |
