NOTES
Additional Information:1979 information:
Early style of double flat, with entrance & 2nd floor porches recessed into facade. This example has many original details including unusual gable window surround and typical 1st and 2nd floor window surrounds. Shaped brackets support gable eave.
Construction date, 1890. (1)

2015- "Rising two-and-one-half stories from a brick foundation, this front-gabled duplex is largely sheathed with vinyl siding; however, the gabled peaks retain their original wooden-shingle sheathing. Oriented to the east, entrance to the lower unit is gained through a door set within a recessed porch; immediately above and on the second floor is another porch, also with a spindled balustrade. The wall space north of the entrance is comprised of a tripartite picture window with pilaster-like ornament and wooden brackets beneath; additional brackets accent the uppermost half-story which carries a unique window composition topped with a modest pent. A second, smaller, tripartite grouping is located along the second floor, right (north) of the porch. Remaining fenestration is largely comprised of one-over-one-light sash arranged singly throughout the house.

This structure is believed to have been built circa 1884 as a single-family home by William G. Rauschenberger, who was born in 1855 in Germany. William was the son of John Rauschenberger, the incorporator of the John Rauschenberger Co., manufacturers of cordage/rope, the factory (no longer extant) of which was located at the corner of Teutonia & Meinecke (formerly Lee Street) avenues. In 1883, William wed Ida Anger and they had three children. William was active in local politics and, after serving as alderman of the Tenth Ward and, afterwards, the Milwaukee Common Council president—during which time he presided at the dedication of the Milwaukee City Hall (1892)—he went on to serve one term as Milwaukee mayor (1896 to 1898). In addition to his political concerns, he worked in the family cordage business until his death in 1918. Ida remained in the home through at least 1925, by which time it had already been converted for use as a duplex."

Bibliographic References:1. Tax Program 2015 report citations: No original building permit on file; City assessor data cites an 1890 date of construction; however, city directories note the home’s former address, 887 Teutonia, beginning as early as 1884 (which coincides with the Rauschenbergers’ date of marriage); “Map of Milwaukee, Wis.,” 1894, 1910; “William G.
