Additional Information: | The old Jorganson Manufacturing Co. building is a one-story factory building constructed of red brick. It has an arched roof with a raised parapet on the west end. Shallow pilasters decorate the center of the main elevation. Windows are large industrial-type multi-light openings. At the rear of the building is a two-story brick addition with a gable roof. There are few industrial buildings from this era in Waupaca, and this building, with its high integrity, represents a type of construction popular during this era. The building was constructed in 1920 for the Jorganson Manufacturing Company. This site was one of the pioneer mill sites in Waupaca and was the location of a grist mill, and more importantly, a wool and felting mill. In 1917, the Jorganson Manufacturing Company, a maker of automobile parts, leased the site and in 1920, added this modern factory building. The company operated until 1928 and in 1929, the Cary Manufacturing Company took over the site for the manufacturing of boilers. In 1932, a major fire burned the historic buildings on the site, leaving only this building extant. In 1964, the site became the Shanak Foundry. The Jorganson Manufacturing Company building is historically significant for its association with a successful metal products company of the 1920s. Small metal products companies that catered to the emerging automobile industry were important in the growth and development of that industry and in providing jobs for local residents. The later company, Cary Manufacturing, also helped keep industry alive in Waupaca, especially during the poor economic times of the Great Depression of the 1930s. Historic industrial sites are often prone to alterations and demolitions. It is of particular significance that this building still remains, with most of its historic appearance intact, on its original site in Waupaca. |
