ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE:

Excellent example of Collegiate Gothic architecture. A large tower rises above the mutil-gabled building, which is faced with russet brick and brown sandstone trim. Originally included in the building were two paneled rooms, the English Room and the East Indian Teakwood Room, designed by Richard Philipp and Elmer Grey respectively.

Construction date, 1937. (1, 2)

HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE:

Served as the library for the Milwaukee-Downer College until 1964, when the college joined with Lawrence in Appleton and the University of Wisconsin acquired the property. The building was named for Alice G. Chapman (1835-1935), who was a major benefactor of the college.
