Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. This two and one half story structure is covered with aluminum siding along its lower level, rolled asphalt on the second and asbestos shingling throughout the uppermost half-story. A brick chimney is located on the south slope of the roof, anchored with wire ties at either side. A shingle, boarded door occupies a canted-corner entry, which faces south, and various altered and replacement window openings are located throughout the first level. A pent overhang with modern shingling extends the width of the building. The overhang is located above the first floor, just beneath the second floor fenestration, which is composed of replacement, double hung sash windows arranged singly and in pairs. An open air porch is located along the north wall of the second level. Finally, the upper half story is oriented to the corner and carries a pair of windows. A historic photo of the building indicates that the entire structure was originally covered with clapboard siding, except for the pent overhang and the upper half story, which featured decorative wooden shingles. Also, display windows originally occupied the east corner entrance, and openings along the second floor on the south facade have been enlarged and rearranged. Prior to moving to the subject structure, Charles Erath began his business in 1888 on Walnut Street. The subject building functioned as the Erath Jewelry Store until 1912, when jeweler Joseph Holzbauer took over the building. He and his wife Elizabeth continued there until 1939. Thereafter the structure functioned as an upholstery store for at least fifteen years. An historic photo of the subject structure is on file at the Milwaukee County Historical Society, Milwaukee (Fond du Lac Avenue file). |
