NOTES
Additional Information:The Rock City School is a one-room school building located on a large lot in the northern part of the Town of Wells. It has a gable roof covered with asphalt shingles and walls covered with clapboards. A concrete block basement was added to the building around 1935, shortly before it closed. A one-story entry addition projects from the north wall of the original block. The school is in fair condition.

The Rock City School is architecturally and historically significant for its type of construction, a rural one-room school. Throughout the nineteenth and much of the twentieth century, rural children received all of their education in such buildings. Due to poor adaptive reuse and lack of use, most of these old rural schools have been lost. In fact, in the survey of the Towns of Jefferson, Leon, and Wells, only two one-room public school buildings with their historic appearances were identified, making them a rare resource.
