| Additional Information: | PEDIMENTED FRONT GABLE. RETURN EAVES. FLUTED DORIC WRAPAROUND PORCH. STILTED FLAT MOULDINGS. The right half of the building was constructed in 1870 while the left half is the 1897 addition. Col. John G. McMynn lived here until 1891 and lived at this site as early as 1866. He served in the Civil War and is best known as a pioneering educator. He was instrumental in organizing Wisconsin's first public school system, was principal of Racine High School and was the Superintendent of Public Instruction from 1864-1868. He established and ran Racine Academy from 1875-1882. Was a Regent for the University of Wisconsin from 1857-1863, 1864-1868, 1868-1870 and 1880-1889. Was president of the Wisconsin State Teacher's Association in 1853. South Side Historic District Walking Tour Guide, 1993.: "The oldest section of this Greek Revival house was built by Patrick Talty, a drayman, in 1865 it became home of John and Marion McMynn. John G. McMynn (1824-1900) was a distinguished Wisconsin educator. He was the first principal of Racine's High School, where in 1858 he graduated the first high school class in Wisconsin history. He was one of the founders of the Wisconsin Teacher's Association. He was also a regent of the University of Wisconsin." |
