Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. THIS FRAME, LATE-QUEEN ANNE HOUSE WAS BUILT IN 1895. ITS EXPANSIVE GAMBREL ROOF IS DISTINGUISHED IN THE FRONT BY A LARGE, GABLE-ROOFED DORMER, WITH RETURNED EAVES AND A 1/2 ROUND WINDOW WITH A KEYSTONE AT ITS CROWN. ANOTHER ROUND ARCHED WINDOW APPEARS AT THE SIDE OF THE DWELLING. A DOUBLE DORIC VERANDA, MARKED BY BALUSTRADED RAILINGS AND PAIRED COLUMNS ON MASONRY BASES, PROJECTS FORWARD ON THE FACADE. THIS ONCE WAS THE HOME OF GOVERNOR GOODLAND, AND IS NOW DESIGNATED AS A LOCAL LANDMARK. Walter S. Goodland (12/22/1862-3/12/1947) lived here from at least 1920-1925. He founded the Ironwood, Michigan Times and published it from 1889-1896. Was editor and part owner of the Beloit Daily News from 1899-1900. From 1900-1932 was the publisher and editor of the Racine Times Call. Was mayor of Racine from 1911-1915. Was a member of the state senate from 1926-1930 and 1930-1934. Elected Lieutenant Governor in 1938 and 1940. Assumed governorship for governor-elect 1943-1945. When elected in 1945, became the oldest man in the history of the United States to be sworn in as a governor. THE DESIGN OF THIS RESIDENCE IS ATTRIBUTED TO ARCHITECT Lambert Bassindale. (SEE BIB. REF. A). Built in 1900 for Edward Hoernel, a local Racine hardware merchant. Purchased by Walter S. Goodland in 1912 and it remained in his family until 1970. He came to Racine in 1900, and that year became editor of the Racine Times, which merged with the Daily Call in 1915. |
