| Additional Information: | ELLIPTICAL ARCH AND CORBELLING AT ROOFLINESTILTED ROUND CORNERED LINTELSTRANSOM OVER MAIN ENTRANCE Resurveyed 2013; subsequent changes include the replacement of earlier 2-over-2 windows across the second story, and the replacement of the front doors. This 2-story ltalianate building was constructed c.1910. It is rectangular in plan with cream brick walls and a flat roof. The front elevation faces west and is symmetrical in plan. The first story contains three individual entrances at the center of the facade and two 1-over-1 windows on each end. The center entrance is slightly recessed and features a single-pane transom. All other doors and windows across the first story have arched brick crowns, but the original arched windows have been replaced with rectangular sash windows. A small band of brick dentils is located between the first and second stories. The second story contains six 1-over-1 windows with "flattened" arch brick crowns. A modest brick cornice spans the facade just below a small rounded parapet at the center of the fagade. The first story of the north elevation (along Hamilton Street) has been covered in concrete. The building is in good condition, but retains only a moderate degree of integrity due to the loss of the original arched windows and the addition of concrete to the first story of the north elevation. As a representative of ltalianate architecture, the building displays the arched window crowns typical of the style, but lacks any other overt references to ltalianate architecture, thus rendering the building a very modest example of the style. Finer representative can be found elsewhere in Racine (WHPD records 28 other ltalianate commercial buildings in the city, 22 of which are NRHP-Iisted). This building was previously surveyed in 1975; subsequent changes include the replacement of earlier 2-over-2 windows across the second story, and the replacement of the front doors. The AHI record was updated with the new survey date and changed appearance. |
