Additional Information: | "A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. 2023- resurveyed as part of Milwaukee Houses of Worship thematic survey. 2020: Resurveyed - Christ Presbyterian Church was constructed in 1974-1975 in the Contemporary style. The brick building is mostly one-story but is irregular in massing, with various box-like building forms that come together to form an L-shaped footprint. The primary, glass entry is centrally located on the south façade and is accessed by a set of concrete steps. There are no windows on the façade apart from two narrow openings west of the entry. The portion of the building forming the L footprint is located at its west end, extending to the rear/north. It is two stories in height with a steeply pitched shed roof that is visible above the one-story façade. Narrow windows line the second story of its east elevation. The property’s WHPD record and site file at the State Historic Preservation Office provided some background information. The origins of Christ Presbyterian Church date back to Perseverance Presbyterian Church founded in the late nineteenth century in Milwaukee by European immigrants. The original church associated with the congregation was located nearby, at the intersection of W. Walnut Street and 18th Street, and it was demolished when this church was completed in 1975. By that time, the congregation was mostly African American. This building was designed by Holland and Steed. Research revealed little about the architectural firm, beyond that it was based in Illinois and designed other churches in that state during the 1970s." |
