Additional Information: | 2017 - Resurveyed The one-story commercial building has a rectangular footprint, rock-faced concrete block exterior, barrel roof, and Boomtown (false) front with a stepped parapet. The east-facing storefront has a central entrance flanked on each side by a large window opening. The entry has been fitted with a modern storm door and the door surround, which may have included a transom and sidelights historically, is clad in vertical wood board siding. The window opening to the south of the entrance is four units wide. The inner two windows are four-over-two fixed sashes, while the outer two windows have been covered with vertical wood board siding (and possibly removed). The window opening to the north of the entrance is three units wide, with all three four-over-two fixed sashes intact. On both the north and south sides of the storefront is a large 16-light fixed window. Toward the rear of the building, the side elevations consist of rock-faced concrete block walls between smooth concrete pilasters. A modern sectional garage door is located on the north side elevation. Near the center of the barrel roof is a brick chimney. Research revealed very little about the history of the building. Based on its appearance, it dates from the early twentieth century and may originally have functioned as a service station and garage, or even an automobile showroom. No past automobile-related uses could be confirmed, however. It appears the building was used as a grocery, the Bellevue Food Market, from the late 1940s to about 1970. The property is not currently in commercial use. |
