Additional Information: | 2000- The Blue Roof Motel consists of two long buildings and four small cottages. The buildings are laid out along the edges of the property, forming a L. One of the original 1935 cottages (this entry) is front-gabled, of frame construction and houses a single rental unit. It is set on a concrete slab foundation and is clad with a blue wavy-edged, rolled siding that is probably original. It has four pane windows that open inward. The roof is currently clad with asphalt shingles. A concrete stoop with steps, built in 1975, leads up to the single entry door. The Blue Roof Motel is an example of the "cottage court", an early typology of the motor court that evolved during the late 1930s from an even earlier type of auto-oriented roadside accomodation known as the "cabin camp." The Blue Roof Motel began as a cottage court around 1935. Individually its cottages retain good integrity, except their roofs are no longer blue. The complex lacks an overall integrity due the lack of its original central building that would have provided amenities for guests and likely served as the residence of the court's proprietors. |
