Additional Information: | HEAVY STONE LINTELS. LIMESTONE SIDE GABLE HOUSE W/ASBESTOS COVERED ADDITION TO REAR. Mormon Road, which separates Racine and Walworth Counties, goes through part of what was once a Mormon settlement, called Broee. Voree was founded by James Jesse Strang, who claimed to be the successor to Mormon prophet, Joseph Smith. The Old Voree Cemetery located in a fenced area just after an old barn on the west side of the road and a few other buildings dating to the 1840s and 1850s exist along the road. The cemetery is thought to contain some remains although there are no gravestones or monuments. Wingfield Watson, a loyal Mormon follower of James Jesse Strang who was a child at the time of the Mormon settlement at Voree, as an adult repurchased 105 acres of land historically part of that settlement in hopes that other Strangites might resettle there. Watson lived in the former Montgomery House at 4325 Mormon Road. At his death in 1922, Watson left his property to a trust to maintain the property for the Strangite Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. |
