Additional Information: | March/June 2001-Rising from an obscured foundation and sheathed with narrow, drop siding, the most distinctive features of this small structure are a steeply pitched gabled roof with flared eaves and a brick chimney on its east endwall. The main door is centered in the east sidewall and flanked by two windows. Both windows and the door are framed by plain, wooden surrounds. Cornerboards also define each of the structure#25;s four corners. An interesting little cottage, its sense of scale was dramatically affected by a garage addition that wraps around the northwest corner. The garage covers a large part of the lower half of the house#25;s chimney, and has a very shallow, gable roof, horizontal board siding and a single plane, overhead door. Also on the property is a small, circa 1950s, ranch-style house. This structure is located on a small parcel of land that was indiscernible when studying plat maps. It is quite likely, however, that it dates to that period during which the Elk Creek Land Company was developing recreational opportunities on its new lake. The building was likely relegated to storage/garage use at whatever time the newer ranch house was erected. Reflecting a cottage style of design, this small structure merited the completion of a survey card. However, no evidence was found to suggest any National Register possibility under Criterion A or B. As for Criterion C, this is a small, largely undistinguished structure, the integrity of which was dramatically affected by the construction of the garage. Thus, no DOE is needed. |
