Additional Information: | A 'site file' titled "West Racine Commercial Historic District" exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. Resurveyed 2015. 2015- "This two-and-one-half story church is located on the northwest corner of Washington and Hayes Avenues. The 1917 Romanesque Revival building has a rectilinear footprint that is oriented perpendicular to Washington Avenue by its front gable roof. The footprint is enlarged by a three story tower at the building's southeast corner and a projecting one-and-one-half story cross gable section on the east elevation. The tower has a flat roof with a parapet that features decorative motifs. The corners of the tower have slim buttresses that extend from the second story to its base. An entrance pavilion is positioned on the tower facade. The roof of the church building is sheathed in asphalt shingles with copper gutters and flashing. The gable ends are parapeted with limestone trim, which is missing from the west slope of the facade gable. The exterior wall surfaces and foundation are clad in brick. Thin buttresses are evenly spaced on the facade and east elevation. Each buttress has limestone caps, and a limestone water table runs between the foundation and first story. The facade of the tower features decorative brickwork between the second and third story windows and on the face of the buttresses. There are several fenestration types present on the church. All of the extant windows are wood framed with stained glass lights. The most prominent window configuration is centered on the fa9ade; it consists of a Diocletian window on the second story, and a grouping of three double hung windows below it on the first story. Another prominent window is on the gable section of the east elevation. It consists of a Diocletian resting directly atop of three double hung windows. The tower has windows on both the facade and east elevations. They include one-over-one sashes on the second story, and matching sashes capped by an arched window on the third story. The first story has several window openings with decorative brick arches; the only extant of these is on the west side of the facade. The rest have been infilled with weatherboard siding, including the basement windows. The smallest windows are narrow fixed lights near the apex of each gable. The primary entrance pavilion on the tower contains two modern metal doors capped by an arch with ornamented spandrels. The center of the arch has a stone panel that reads "Pentecostal Church of the Nazarene 1917."" - "Washington Ave (STH 20), Roosevelt Ave to West Blvd", WISDot #2440-09-00, Prepared by Shelley Greene (2015). |
