South Side Historic District Walking Tour Guide, 1993: "This was the site of a cottage and cabinet shop built by Allen Porter about 1842. In 1858 he opened a store downtown, where the Porter Furniture Company has remained ever since. In 1891 Mr. Porter's granddaughter, May Northrop, married Philip Wackerhagen. The old Porter Cottage was moved and James Gilbert Chandler was commissioned to design the present Queen Anne Style house. It was built for May and Philip as a wedding gift from her parents. The Wackerhagens spent their married life here, and in her widowhood, May lived here with her daughter, Alice, who remained single and also lived here until she died in 1976 at the age of 83. Although it was altered and added to over the years, a recent restoration of the front porch makes the house look much like it did when it was built."
