Additional Information: | This frame, one room schoolhouse rests on a fieldstone foundation and is topped with a gabled, asphalt shingle roof. Sheathed with clapboard, the primary facade features a central entrance with a paneled wood and glass door. Deteriorating concrete stairs provide access to the entrance. Four over four light, double hung sash windows with two over two light storms flank the entry to either side. Each of the structure's longitudinal walls features three, symmetrically placed sash windows; all fenestration features plain wooden surrounds with a pedimented windowhead. A frame, lean to addition extends from the rear wall of the school and appears to be used for wood storage. The current owner indicated that the original cupola/belltower (AHI #122180) was removed when the school was re-roofed. The bell tower is presently located behind the adjacent Kartman house where it is used as a planter. The interior of the schoolhouse remains largely intact, with wooden floors, a teacher's platform, and blackboards remaining in place. The playground equipment (AHI #122181) also remains on the premises. Elwell School was erected in 1886, on land donated by John Engels. The school was named after F. A. Elwell, an area farmer and assistant organizer of the school districts of Waterloo Township. The Elwell School operated independently until 1962, when it was consolidated into Cassville Jt. District No. 8. The current owners, the Kartman family, purchased the property in 1965 and built a home immediately west of the schoolhouse#20;which is currently used for storage. |
