Additional Information: | June 2001-This two story, frame Front Gable house appears to date from c. 1875. It is clad with clapboards and sits on a stone rubble foundation. The house is trimmed with simple corner and cornice boards and displays 9/9 and 1/1 double hung sash windows. The off-center front door is framed with sidelights and a transom, a Greek Revival element. South of the door, a cottage window flanked by 1/1 double hung sash is found (a c. 1890 configuration). A hip roofed, closed rail porch with Doric columns extends across the front (west) facing façade. This porch appears to date from c. 1915. Statement: This building has gone through various changes, according to the Sanborn maps. In 1894, it had a one story addition attached to the north-facing façade. At that time, a grocery occupied this building and the addition housed a cobbler's shop. The uses and footprint of the building were the same in 1902. By 1922, the one story addition had been removed. The Greenwood Telephone Company (established 1905) occupied the building from at least 1922 until at least 1940. Currently, the building is in residential use. |
