Additional Information: | June 2001-This frame, Front Gable church appears to date from c. 1890. It is composed of an enclosed, front-gabled entrance porch and a front-gabled main block. The entrance porch does not appear on the 1940 Sanborn map, is finished with vinyl siding, rests on a concrete foundation, and completely obscures the original front façade of the church. A pair of doors, centered on the front-facing façade of the entrance porch and sheltered by a front-gabled overdoor on brackets, open into the vestibule. The main block is finished with wood shingles and set on a stone foundation. Paired, 1/1 double hung sash, each pair surmounted by wood panel with applied, three-lobed tracery, appear on the side-facing facades of the main block. On each of the side facing facades, a small, front gabled, enclosed entrance porch is attached (these entrance porches are original). Asphalt shingles cover all the roofs. A mansard-roofed steeple perches on the peak of the roof of the main block, above the original entrance. Statement of Significance: This church was built c. 1890 for the Presbyterian Church of Greenwood, which was organized in the late 1880s. The Zion Reformed Church of Greenwood, a German-speaking congregation established in 1902, bought the building in 1915. In 1940, the Reformed Church was still in residence. Currently, the Zion United Church of Christ occupies the building. |
