Additional Information: | Currently in residential use (2001), this small, square building is one-story tall and rests on a raised basement. The building is veneered with brick and exhibits a flat roof with a simple parapet. A flight of concrete steps with closed, brick rails leads up to the centrally located entrance. The entrance consists of a single door with sidelights and a transom (all replacements) set in a segmental-arched surround of stone. Above that is decorative brickwork and a stone panel inscribed "VAN DYNE SCHOOL". The building is embellished with a water table composed of a brick soldier course, a brick soldier course capped with a stone molding that together form a cornice, stone sills, brick soldier course lintels, and a narrow stone coping. The large window openings on the facade have been filled in with glass block, inset with small awning windows. Side windows have been reduced. Two small frame additions are on each side elevation; both appear to post-date 1965. Laureen Wendt carved in the left side of stairwell walking into the school a message saying that she loved Mrs. Horner who was the teacher by 1970. The school closed in c. 1970 when Van Dyne became part of the North Fond du Lac school district. |
