Additional Information: | This house is the Regency subtype of the Art Moderne style. A site file exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. it is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation. It is also one of the few houses in Milwaukee that exhibits the influence of the International style of architecture is this unusual 2-story, symmetrically composed flat-roofed residence that was built for a local physician. The curving canopy that shelters the front door and the feather-like design in the second story window are features associated with a somewhat parallel style, the Art Moderne, which was popular at roughly the same time. The house received new windows and was reskinned with new brown brick between 2004 and 2008 (City of Milwaukee permits). The Schumacher house is a pivotal structure associated with International Style architecture in Milwaukee although it is decidedly not the most exuberant or purest example of its kind. Good examples of International Style residential architecture are rare in America. The city’s best example of an International style house is located just four blocks from the study area at 3840 N. 55th Street. |
