Additional Information: | Starting in 1948, the church was resided with lannon stone, given a new belfry and renamed York Memorial Church. 2021: The York Evangelical Lutheran Church was constructed in 1885 in a Gothic Revival style and received a Neogothic Revival belltower addition and stone veneer in 1948-1949. The building is rectangular in plan with a stone veneer exterior and an asphalt-shingled, steeply-pitched gable roof. The front elevation faces south and is symmetrical in plan with a small front-gabled entry bay projecting from the center of the façade. The entry bay features buttresses at the front corners and a steeply-pitched roof with decoratively shaped bargeboards with a small pinnacle at the center peak. Centered in the entry bay is a pair of heavy wood double-doors with glazing in the upper third. The doors are set under a triangular recess containing stained glass windows with heavy wood mullions. Above the entry bay is a large Gothic arched opening containing a pair of downsized, Gothic-arched stained glass windows. The space around the windows is clad in wood siding. A wood or metal cross extends from the peak of the Gothic-arched opening through the center roof peak. Side elevations feature regularly spaced Gothic-arched windows with stone buttresses between each. A squared tower is located at the rear end of the east elevation and contains a secondary entrance in its southern wall. Above the entry level of the tower, stone piers with pyramidal caps rise from each corner and anchor a wooden bell tower mass with louvered panels in each wall; the bell tower mass is capped by a low pyramidal roof with a modest spire. |
