NOTES
Additional Information:A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office.

This complex includes AHI #132018-132034.

This property consists of fifteen, clapboard-sheathed or drop sided frame cottages/cabins, a frame ice house, as well as a clapboard-sheathed, Craftsman-inspired lodge building. A modern garage addition was built onto the rear of the lodge in circa 1999.

2020: As of the 2004 survey of Vilas County Resorts, the resort was misidentified as Wernecke's Resort (page 53-54). Per re-review, the resort was originally known as Eagle Crest Resort and built circa 1926. It was initially run by Joe and June Clares, who appear to have lost it as a result of the Great Depression. Ownership then reverted to the mortgage carrier--the Aid Association for Lutherans and it appears to have continued to run until circa 1933. It is unclear if it was in operation between 1933 and 1938. By 1938, it was known as North Woods Camp (for Girls), during which time it continued under the ownership of the Aid Association for Lutherans. It continued to run as a girls camp through circa 1946. In 1944, it was purchased by Loyd Bamford, an Eagle River resort owner (Bamford's Birch Lake Cottages on Little St. Germain Lake) since the 1930s. It is believed to have then been run again as a resort, then known as Eagle Lake Resort. In 1950, Charles and Mary Cook purchased the property (on land contract) and ran the Eagle Lake Resort. They satisfied the terms of the land contract in 1958. In 1965, the Cooks entered into a land contract with their nephew, Robert Jansen Sr., who then ran it with his wife Frances. That contract was fully satisfied in 1978. The resort was, thereafter, run by Robert Jansen Jr. and his wife Pam. Today the property continues to be run by the Jansen family.
