Additional Information: | The property upon which Jackson's Lakesode Cottages were built was originally n oted as the Frank Carley homestead. In 1903, Carley erected four cottages on seventy-nine acres of land and it was the first resort on Little St. Germain Lake. In the fall of 1920, after selling the Red Oak Resort (established in 1905) on Alma Lake to Walter DeHaas, George H. and Katherine Jackson purchased the Carly property. George H. Jackson was born in Rock County, Wisconsin, in 1865, the son of George and Anna Jackson. Father George was born in Belfast, Irelan and emigrated to Canada in 1856. The Jackson family moved to Floyd, Iowa, in 1868; son George attended schools in Iowa until he moved to Nebraska in 1884. After returning to Iowa, wereh worked as a machinist until 1903, George H. and his wife Katherine came to Eagle River. After running the Red Oaks Resort from 1905 until 1920 and purchasing the former Carley property, Jackson added five cottages to the original four. Jackson died in 1923 and the property was then maintained by his wife until her death in 1929. George's son Art and his wife Anna then ran the resort. Art built the main lodge in 1935 and replaced the original cottages through the 1940s. The cypress furniture which remains in the lodge was built by Art. In 1947, a residence was added on to the north side of the lodge and became the permanet residence of the resort owners. Prior to this, the Jackson's had a house to the east on STH 70. Art died in 1953 and wife Anna continued the resort with the help of son George A. Anna passed away in 1969 and George and hsi wife Janet updated the cottage's kitchens and bathrooms that year. The resort is now run by George and Anna's son Tom and his wife Buffy; son Ken has a fishing guide service. Although the property had fourteen cottages, it currently has ten;two are year-round rentals, while the remaining eight are seasonal. |
