Additional Information: | 2005- Owned by A&W Cold Storage and rising from a split-stone foundation punctuated with eight-light windows, this is a one-story, front gable, brick building. The main entrance is centered in the south gabled endwall. It is framed by brick columns that project slightly and sheltered by a gabled porch roof supported by three simple brackets. Immediately above the porch, and centered in the gabled peak, is a small, four-over-four-light, round. arch window. The south portions of the east and west sidewalls contain wall dormers, the gabled peaks of which are supported by three simple brackets. Set within the wall dormer to the west are two, double-hung windows, below which is a flower box. The wall dormer to the east claims two, double-hung, six-over-six-light windows with a brick sill. The windows to the east are larger than those to the west. The north portion of the building narrows. The wall to the west is solid brick, while that to the east contains three windows, all with transoms and two central lights, below which are two, small louvered lights. These are all thought to be replacement windows. A brick chimney is located at the north end of the building in the west plane of the roof. A large brick and metal addition that facilitates storage extends to the north and east of the historic building. The history of this building is somewhat clouded. It was initially thought to have been a school, however, no plat maps were found to suggest that a school was ever located in the southeast corner of Section 16. Lacking that evidence, it may be concluded that the structure evolved as a small office building about which no information was apparent. -"I-94" WisDOT ID #1030-20-00, Prepared by Heritage Research, Ltd (McQuillen) (2006). The school closed in 1947. |
