SEVERAL PERIODS OF CONSTRUCTION VISIBLEHOUSE REACHED PRESENT SALTBOX APPEARANCEBY 1900 FREDERICK HILGEN FOUNDED AND DEVELOPED CEDARBURG

One of the oldest houses in Cedarburg, it was built by Friederich Hilgen, one of the founding fathers of Cedarburg. The earliest part of the house is frame, later covered with brick in the front and limestone rubble on the other three sides. The rear wing added in the late 1850s gives the house its saltbox appearance. The house stands at an odd angle to the street because it was built before the road was cut through Cedarburg.
