NOTES
Additional Information:A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation-Public History. Gables are cantilevered from the house and bays emerge on three sides. There is a notable lack of exterior ornamentation. Quarter-sawn tiger oak was used in almost all of the rooms, with the exception of the kitchen floor and on the third floor, which was used as the servants' quarters and was covered in pine. During the period of 1947 to 1965, the house was divided into apartments, the front porch was enclosed and an exterior stairway was added.

Hughes was a railroad official. He and his wife lived here until 1902 when they sold the house to Edith and William Mitchell Lewis. In 1903, Lewis was a founder of the Mitchell Motor Car Co. In 1921, they sold the house to Louis and Lillie Vance. Vance was a vice-president of the Racine Rubber Co. They sold the house in 1927 to Thomas and Helen Kearney. In August of 1945, she died in a fire in the master bedroom. From 1947-1965, the house was divided into apartments. It was purchased in 1992 by Russell and Sandra Larson. In 2003, Dashner and Reynolds purchased the property and have worked to restore it. The porch enclosure was removed as well as the front exterior stairway.
