Additional Information: | FIREPROOF BUILDING NEXT TO RR TRACKS. EXPOSED EAVE RAFTERS. HEAVY CONCRETE LINTELS. TRANSOM OVER DOOR. February 2002-This two and one half story tavern is constructed of rusticated concrete block. The cross-gabled roof is clad with asphalt shingles and each gable is covered with stucco. The eaves are open and feature exposed rafter tails. The west, south and east sides carry an open, wrap-around porch supported by Tuscan concrete columns resting upon concrete block piers. A modern, metal railing is located in front of the columns. The west endwall (left) carries a two story, shed roof entry addition sheathed with aluminum siding. The rear (north) elevation features a short, two story, plain concrete block wing from which projects a long, modern, restaurant addition sheathed with board siding and pierced by casement windows. The original block's fenestration consists of regularly placed, one over one, double hung sashes situated in openings created by concrete lintels and sills. The date 1911 is imprinted on one of these lintels. A large, metal clad volleyball arena is located behind the restaurant addition. Based upon interior and exterior observation, this property is believed to have been a tavern owned by August Gruenwald. Gruenwald most likely chose this location for his business because it was adjacent to a passenger shelter for the Milwaukee Northern Railway interurban line. August died in 1924 and the property was passed on to his wife Minnie, who sold it to Katherine Zeller in 1942. Zeller retained the property into the 1960s. No information on any of these owners was located. Today, the building is the site of Libby Montana's Bar & Grill. |
