HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
This house was built for the family of Johann (John) F. Klug. Klug came to Mequon from northern Germany in 1839 as part of the Freistadt settlement. The Freistadt families were Lutherans who came to this country for religious freedom. Johann Klug purchased the land which this house sits in 1839. He died in 1851 and his wife Wilhelmine, married Friedrich Prahl. Tax Rolls indicate that Friedrich Prahl owned this property between 1857 and 1869. In 1870, Johann and Wilhelmine Klug's son, Nathanel owned the property and held into it until at least 1887. [b, f, p. 39] |
