NOTES
Additional Information:A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. Before the arrival of the railroad, Elkhart Lake was remote and difficult to reach, except by horse-drawn carriage from the Sheboygan and Mississippi station at Glenbeulah. After 1872, when the Milwaukee and Northern Railroad arrived, vacationers from Milwaukee, Chicago, and St. Louis began to flock here. In 1897, the railway company constructed this picturesque depot. A large octagonal dormer pierces the steeply pitched hipped roof, and a shady veranda supported by wooden brackets spans the facade. The depot’s homey appearance was likely meant to evoke warm hospitality. The Elkhart Lake Historical Society has restored the depot and maintains it as a museum. A 1906 Soo Line wooden caboose, built by the American Car and Foundry Company, stands in the adjacent Depot Park.
