NOTES
Additional Information:HISTORICAL BACKGROUND:

IN 1861, ENTREPRENEURS GEORGE W. RYLAND AND J. C. HOLLOWAY (THEY WERE RELATED BY MARRIAGE) ESTABLISHED A PRIVATE BANKING BUSINESS IN CONNECTION WITH THEIR MERCANTILE OPERATION. THESE ENTERPRISES WERE LOCATED ON THE SOUTHEAST CORNER OF MADISON AND MAPLE STREETS. IN 1864, THE PARTNERS ERECTED A NEW STRUCTURE, CONSTRUCTED OF MILWAUKEE BRICK AND THE FIRST THREE-STORY BUILDING IN LANCASTER, ON THE SAME SITE. (B)

FIVE YEARS AFTER THIS EXPANSION, RYLAND AND HOLLOWAY SOLD THE MERCANTILE BUSINESS AND CONCENTRATED THEIR EFFORTS ON BANKING. IN 1871, THEIR FINANCIAL INSTITUTION WAS MOVED TO A NEW BRICK BUILDING ADJOINING THE EARLIER STRUCTURE ON THE EAST. (B,C). (THIS IS THE TWO-STORY BUILDING IMMEDIATELY ADJACENT TO THE THREE-STORY BLOCK THAT IS LOCATED AT 107 E. MAPLE ST. AND WHICH THE PARTNERS CAUSED TO HAVE BUILT IN 1871. IN ADDITION, THE PARTNERS ALSO HAD THE BUILDING AT 111-113 E. MAPLE ST. BUILT NEXT TO THE NEW BANK IN THE SAME YEAR AND UT WAS USED AS AN INCOME-PRODUCING RETAIL BUILDING.(A)

HOLLOWAY WITHDREW FROM THE FIRM IN 1875 LEAVING RYLAND TO MANAGE THE BANK ALONE UNTIL 1880 WHEN CASHIER RICHARD MEYER, SR. AND HIS SON RICHARD MEYER, JR. BECAME PARTNERS IN THE NEWLY REORGANIZED GEORGE W. RYLAND & COMPANY. RYLAND HIMSELF WITHDREW FROM THE COMPANY IN 1887, BUT A YEAR LATER ASSISTED IN THE CREATION OF THE STATE BANK OF GRANT COUNTY (108 S. MADISON STREET, 42/18), OF WHICH HE WAS VICE-PRESIDENT. (B,C). (SEE FINAL REPORT FOR MORE INFORMATION CONCERNING RYLAND'S CAREER).

THE BANK BEGUN BY RYLAND BECAME, UPON HIS DEPARTURE, THE MEYER-SHOWALTER BANK, RICHARD MEYER, SR., RICHARD MEYER, JR., AND REUBEN SHOWALTER, PROPRIETORS. IT MOVED TO A BUILDING ON THE NORTHWEST CORNER OF MADISON AND MAPLE STREETS, THE McDONALD BLOCK, CONSTRUCTED AFTER THE DISASTROUS FIRE OF 1888. (B,C). (THE McDONALD BLOCK, NOW ALTERED, HOUSES THE UNION BANK & TRUST, 105 WEST MAPLE STREET, 47/33, THE SUCCESSOR TO THE MEYER-SHOWALTER BANK).

THE BUILDING AT 111-113 E. MAPLE ST. HAS NOW BEEN COVERED OVER IN STUCCO AND IS NO LONGER A CONTRIBUTING BUILDING IN THE DISTRICT. ITS ORIGINAL APPEARANCE CAN BE SEEN IN WATTON'S SOUVENIR OF LANCASTER.
