Additional Information: | THIS SIMPLE COMMERCIAL BLOCK IS IDENTIFIED MAINLY BY SEGMENTAL ARCH OPENINGS AND HIGHLIGHTED BY VOUSSOIRS. A RECTANGULAR PLAN CONFIGURATION, A FLAT ROOF, AND A BRICK EXTERIOR ARE OTHER FEATURES OF THIS TWO STORY RETAIL BUILDING. A SECOND STORY ADDITION WAS BUILT BETWEEN 1905 AND 1912. (B) THIS STRUCTURE WAS FOUND TO BE IN GOOD CONDITION. ITS HISTORIC COMMERCIAL USES WERE AS FOLLOWS: 140 E. MAPLE WAS THE LOCATION OF A BAKERY IN C. 1878 (C); A HARNESS SHOP FROM C. 1894 TO C. 1899; A MILLINERY IN C. 1905; AND A BARBERSHOP IN C. 1912. (D) HISTORICAL BACKGROUND: THIS BRICK STRUCTURE HAS HOUSED A VAREITY OF COMMERCIAL ENTERPRISES. IN AN 1878 PHOTOGRAPH, A BAKERY OCCUPIED THE SMALLER STRUCTURE (140 E. MAPLE STREET), WHICH WAS UNTIL THE EARY TWENTIETH CENTURY A SINGLE-STORY EDIFICE. (C) THE SANBORN MAPS AVAILABLE FOR THE CITY OF LANCASTER SHOW A BARBERSHOP AT 140 E. MAPLE STREET. (D). |
