NOTES
Additional Information:Hip roofed square entrance tower projecting at center of facade; short transept; round arched stained glass windows and doors with keystone and articulated voussoirs; round arched belfry openings and wndows with diamond paned glass. Constructed during the yeard 1870-1872 of Chippewa sandstone in the severe simplicity of a provincial Romanesque Revival style, the Notre Dame Catholic Church designed by Father Krautbauer of Milwaukee (A) depends primarily on round arched windows and a square centrally placed entrance tower for its Romanesque Revival character. Built under the direction of the locally venerated pastor, Father C.F.X. Goldsmith, the church is further ornamented by arched window frames with stone voussoirs and keystones and an east rose window with tracery. The earliest extant church structure in Chippewa Falls, the Notre Dame Church, was listred in the National Register of Historic Places on April 4, 1983 as part of a Notre Dame Parish Multiple Nomination. Construction of Notre Dame Church was begun in 1870 under the supervision of the pastor of the Notre Dame Parish, Rev. C.F.X. Goldsmith. Builders James Lawler and Matthew Cummings received contracts for masonry and carpentry respectively. Stones for the Church were from McGuirk and MJcLarky's quarry, which was located inthe present Irvine Park. Plans for the church was drawn by Reverend F. X. Krautbauer of Milwaukee. The building was completed in 1872. (A) The origins of this church began as early as 1855 when a small, temporary building, called both "St. May's of the Falls," and "Lady of the Pines" was erected for Notre Dame parisioners. This building served the parish until the first Notre Dame Church was completed in 1857. The present Notre Dame Church replaced this building in 1872. Notre Dame is the earliest extant church structure in Chippewa Falls and is the "mother" church for Catholic parishes in Chippewa County. It was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on April 4, 1983 as part of a Notre Dame Parish Multiple Nomination. #650: Notre Dame School (20-5) Chapel (20-12) Convent (20-14) Rectory (20-7) High school (18-37) Grotto (20-10) Pioneer Memorial (20-11).
