NOTES
Additional Information:A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. Previously surveyed in 2005. THIS VERY FINE NEO-GOTHIC REIVAL STYLE CHURCH WAS BUILT IN 1932 TO A DESIGN BY WINONA, MINNESOTA ARCHITECT BENJAMIN J. KNOWLES. Stone-detailed bell tower in the northwest corner. Fenstration throughout the church is typically detailed with decorative stone surrounds and placed symmetrically, while upper-story windows exhibit tracery and are pointed-arch examples. The facade consists of a decorative three-door, stone-detailed opening with a large, pointed-arch stained-glass window with tracery above. Gabled wings capped with stone project from the rear of the building while brick buttresses with stone caps embellish the remaining elevations. The Sacred Heart parish was formed in 1916 after St. John the Baptist, located on the north side of town, grew overcrowded and it was decided that a "south side" parish was needed. Father Hubert Stehling, assistant priest at St. John's, served as the perish's first priest. The school building (AHI 138440) was originally used as a combination school and church until this structure was built.
