NOTES
Additional Information:A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. THIS STEEL STAND PIPE IS A RARE, HIGHLY INTACT SURVIVOR OF A ONCE COMMON RESOURCE TYPE. It was originally constructed as an integral part of the new city-wide water and electrical supply system, which was built by the Chicago firm of John H. Brown & Associates. Prior to 1901, both homeowners and businesses in the city received water from their own wells. After a major fire in 1896 destroyed 19 downtown businesses, public agitation resulted in the city's decision to establish a local electrical water supply system. This successful system was the ancestor of the Evansville Water and Light Utility. The standpipe currently serves as a communication relay tower. 2009- "The City of Evansville Stand Pipe is a steel water utility structure constructed in 1901 by the Chicago Bridge and Iron Company. The stand pipe is clad in painted steel and capped with a low steel railing." - "CTH C between 5th St and 1st St", WisDOT ID #5960-00-00", Prepared by Justin Miller and Jennifer R. Harvey (2009). "The City of Evansville's still highly intact historic standpipe was constructed in 1901 as an integral part of the new city-wide water and electrical supply system that was built in that year by the Chicago firm of John H. Brown & Associates. Prior to 1901, both homeowners and businesses in the city received water from their own individual wells. Strategically placed cisterns served as water sources for firefighting. After a major fire in 1896 destroyed nineteen downtown businesses, public agitation resulted in the City's decision to establish a local electrical and water supply system. This successful system was the ancestor of the Evansville Water & Light Utility. The standpipe no longer serves the water system, but does function as a communication relay tower. The Evansville standpipe is believed to be the last Chicago Bridge & Iron Company standpipe remaining in Wisconsin."
