Additional Information: | 1999: As early as 1874, J. Nett is noted as having a structure at the subject southwest corner location; however, tax roll information indicates that Joseph J. Schmitz was in possession of the subject property by no later than 1880. Schmitz is noted as running a general merchandise store as early as 1874; however, at that time, it appears to have occupied the northwest corner of the same intersection. The next available plat (1893) notes the subject structure as a hotel and post office and the associated partron's directory indicates that Schmitz ran the hotel and acted as postmaster, as well as operated a general merchandise store. Although it is unclear, John Nett may have operated the hotel's associated saloon. By 1910, the structure is noted as a store and saloon, both entities of which were owned and operated by John Simon and Henry Gerhartz. Simon sold his interest in the venture to Gerhartz in 1916. Anton Korb, Gordy "Irish" Mangan, Ben Ebertz and Elroy Steiner were the successive owners between no later than 1930 and the 1970s. In the late 1980s, an associated dance hall was demolished. The first floor of the east gabled block remains a tavern (Jeff's Marytown Tap), while the upper level as well as the west wing function as apartment units. |
