Additional Information: | Building 503 was constructed as the aircraft maintenance building during the mid-1950s expansion of Volk Field CRTC into a permanent training site for Air National Guard units. The architect listed on the drawings was John J. Flad & Associates and Mead & Hunt, Inc., Architects & Engineers, Madison, Wisconsin, through the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Chicago District. The one-story building measures 102 x 62 feet. The building has concrete-block walls that were finished with exterior insulation finishing system (i.e., dryvit). The flat roof has a metal eave. All windows and doors are modern replacement units. The north elevation has two overhead track doors and a single metal door with a large light. The east elevation has seven window openings; the windows are metal-frame, fixed awning units containing dark glass. The west elevation has one overhead track door, one set of paired solid metal doors, and five casement windows. The south elevation has three window openings and three door openings. The doors are single and paired metal units. In 1982, the building was expanded from its original 6,324 square feet to 8,370 square feet through the construction of an addition along the west elevation. The building was depicted on maps during the 1980s with an L-shaped footprint that was squared off by 1992. In 1990, the interior of the building was renovated into a radar/radio maintenance building to accommodate the 128th Tactical Control Squadron. A new overhead door was installed on the north elevation and new windows were installed on the east elevation. The exterior walls were refinished with dryvit during the 1990s. |
