NOTES
Additional Information:2015- This two-story, brick building features Mediterranean Revival-style characteristics including a red tile pent above the
second story, twisted columns surrounding the center entrance and a decorative stone parapet. Modern storefronts flank
the center entrance on the primary (north) facade. Upper level window openings contain six-over-one, double-hung,
wooden sash and feature soldier brick lintels and limestone sills.

The subject building was constructed in 1927 by contractor John J. Kern for Rae Realty Company. Original occupants
included soft drink parlor proprietress, Mrs. Josephine Stanzar and the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company (A&P)
grocers. By the mid-twentieth century, a succession of businesses occupied the building including barber Clarence
Severson, Lutz Electric Company and an appliance store.

The building was designed by architect Alfred H. Siewert. Siewert apprenticed with Milwaukee architect, Fred Graf. He
would later work for the Chicago firm of Perkins, Fellows & Hamilton and then the Manitowoc partnership of Smith &
Reynolds. He returned to Milwaukee in the fall of 1923 and opened an office at 3601 W. Nmih Avenue. In addition to the
subject building, he also executed the 1948 addition to the Johnson School and the 1956 addition to Trinity Evangelical
Lutheran Church, both of which are located in West Allis.

2019 - Resurveyed - altered appearance due to replacement windows and altered storefronts. "This two-story brick commercial vernacular building was designed by Alfred H. Siewert and constructed in 1927. It has some Mediterranean Revival-style elements, including a red tile pent roof, a twisted column door surround, and a decorative stepped parapet with stone coping. The symmetrical façade consists of a storefront on each side of a central door providing access to the second floor. That door’s surround includes the aforementioned twisted columns, as well as a four-light transom and a stone entablature with a shield ornament. The storefronts are both altered and include recessed entryways and large display windows with simple bulkheads. The east storefront has a boarded-up transom, while the west storefront has no transom. On the second story are four window openings. The inner two openings each have a grouping of three replacement one-over-one sash windows entryways, while the outer openings each have a single replacement one-over-one sash window. "
**2020 - Resurveyed for I-94 project 1060-27-04. No significant changes apparent since last survey.
