| Additional Information: | Rising two stories, this educational structure is faced with brick and trimmed with stone (or concrete). A narrow band of trim runs along the top of the structure and features trapezoidal shapes; similar, raised trapezoids outline the randomly arranged windows along both levels. Entrances are vertically delineated of brick and contain a projecting overhang above the first level, while the area above the overhang includes additional, raised shapes that suggest the world map. Designed by the firm of Schutte & Mochon, this large school building was built in 1968 and was originally named Frank Lloyd Wright Junior High. The building continues to function as an educational facility and has been converted for use as a middle school. 2025: The former Frank Lloyd Wright Junior High School, now called the Frank Lloyd Wright (FLW) Intermediate School, was constructed in 1968. It is a two-story, Contemporary style middle school building with a square footprint, concrete foundation, and flat roof. The parapet is clad with a carved stone band with trapezoidal shapes. The walls are constructed of precast panels of brown brick and feature randomly placed stone trapezoidal shapes; some of the shapes frame windows. Thin brick pilasters flank entrances on the north, west, and east elevations. Cantilevered flat roofs shelter the first story entrances and are decorated with the same trapezoidal shapes; the shapes on the north elevation are painted yellow and black. Above each entrance are precast stone panels carved with world continents. Fenestration includes aluminum frame single-pane windows and aluminum and glass doors. A set of entrance stairs provides access from West Cleveland Avenue. It has concrete walls scored with vertical lines and there are five concrete squares projecting from the lower south wall. Two panels with black and yellow trapezoidal shapes are attached to the upper south walls. It has concrete stairs and metal pipe railings. |
