Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation-Public History. The Morrison Apartment building was constructed in 1925 for Armin Miller, who named it after his father, Morris. Miller also constructed the Art Deco Annason apartment building next door. 2008- "This building, known as the Morrison Apartments, is a fmrr stocy apartment building with large storefront The building has a rectangular plan and is constructed of brown multi-hued brick on the north and east public elevations, and tan brick on the other, nonpublic elevations. The details of the building are from the Mediterranean Revival style and primarily executed in terra cotta.. The north and east elevations feature a tall, flat cornice defined by vertical brick belt courses. The cornice is decorated with brick corbelled diamonds running horizontally across the two public elevations. The cornice is interrupted in four places on the north and east elevations by decorative hip roof hoods with brackets that sit above three-stories of paired windows with terra cotta surrounds. The terra cotta surrrounds are decorated with rope moldings and the spandrels between the second and third floors are brick panels accented with terra cotta shields. Three of these terra cotta surrounds accent a single set of paired windows, but over the main entrance into the apartment building on the east elevation, two sets of terra cotta surrounds are joined, doubling the width of the decoration over the entrance. Other windows of the building are symmetrically placed single-light double-bung sashes. The main entrance is a modem metal and glass door topped with a partially stained glass sunburst transom and terra cotta rope molding surround. Flanking the entrance on each side are three round arched openings filled with two-light windows topped with fanlights. This entire grouping of openings is surrounded by terra cotta tiles. A terra cotta cornice sits between the first and second stories and runs around to the north elevation to form a cornice for the storefront. The storefront has two very large show window areas flanking a double door entrance. Terra cotta pilasters decorate each end of the storefront. The large metal framed show windows sit within a frame of black granite tiles that is a more recent alteration. An older photograph shows that these same areas were once clad with mosaic tiles, but it is unclear if that was the original material." - "E Capitol Dr, Estabrook Pkwy to Lake Dr", WisDOT ID #2025-12-011", Prepared by Carol Lohry Cartwright (2008). |
