Additional Information: | Plat maps indicate that this house built sometime between 1902 and 1916 while assessment records show a 1900 date of construction. In 1916, the house and its one-acre parcel were owned by Adrian Fonteine (sources also cite Fontaine or Fontine), who was born on 14 July 1865 in Cedar Grove. He attended Milwaukee's Spencerian Business College and married Emma Duenk on 12 May 1896. Fonteine was in the retail lumber business (circa 1896 to 1901) in Cedar Grove before he became the manager of the Cedar Grove Telephone Company (until around 1919). In 1913, he was the chairman of the board of the Wisconsin Foundry & Steel Works. With regard to his civic life, Fonteine served a term in 1900 on the Sheboygan County Board and was a long-time postmaster and Justice of the Peace in Cedar Grove. He moved to Milwaukee around 1920 and died in 1927. The Cedar Grove Corporation owned the house in 1941. It remains a private residence. S. Main Street Survey--HRL (2009). |
