It is of stone construction rests on a stone foundation. It has a hip roof covered with asphalt shingles and has vinyl soffits underneath the eaves. Windows are one-over-one wood along with one-over-one vinyl sash. The windows feature stone lintels and sills. There is brick infill and glass-block windows around the primary entry on the front (east) facade, with a sign above the main entryway that reads “ROCK RIVER HOUSE.” The door at the side (north) elevation has been replaced. A two-story addition is at the rear portion of the side (north) elevation. The addition features a flat roof and corbelled brick coursework. According to Jim Polster, President of the Theresa Historical Society, this was originally The Rock River House, which was an early boarding house, saloon, and stagecoach stop in Theresa. Polster also noted that before prohibition it was owned by Phillip & Louis Mueller. The main source for information on Theresa history, a book titled Life in Theresa in the 1930s, 40s, & 50s as I Saw it and Lived it (hereafter shortened to Life in Theresa) by Jim Widmer provided information on the buildings within the village of Theresa’s small commercial downtown. Widmer states, without giving a specific date, that during the early nineteenth century the Rock River House was run by the Charlie Bernard Family as a bar. |
