NOTES
Additional Information:A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. Elihu W. Bruce was issued a land patent for the northeast Section of Section 19 in 1855. He arrived in Ellsworth, which was then known as Perry, with brothers Calib and Eli in 1855. A one-hundred-twenty-acre section of the property was sold to William E. Kinne of Rock County, Wisconsin in 1859 (Warranty Deed (WD), Pierce County Courthouse (PCC) 1859: Deed Book (DB) G/63). William, who was born in Vermont and Lucena Kinne relocated from Avon, Rock County, Wisconsin to Ellsworth in 1860 and became prominent members of the community. The family donated property for the construction of the 1867 Methodist Church and was involved in the establishment of Perry#25;s first school . The couple was parents to eight children; among them were twins girls, the first Euro-American children to be born in the Village of Ellsworth. Russell Kinne, who was one of five sons, purchased a thirty-one-acre parcel in 1865 for seventy five dollars (WD PCC 1865: DB N/76).

Russell and his wife, Clara L, sold the property to the widow, Delilah Davis in 1869 for seven hundred, fifty dollars (WD, PCC 1969: DB P/28). This increase of dollar value suggests that the property was improved by the time of this transaction. Delilah Davis, with her husband Alvin, came from the state of New York to Ellsworth about 1860. Alvin died while in the service during the civil war. A daughter married Harrison Kinne, a son of William and Lucena in 1871.

A house is depicted on a one-acre parcel in the 1877-8 Atlas of Pierce County, and in 1880, that parcel was purchased by John E. Elkins (WD, PCC 1880: DB 27/461). Sylvester Harris was the owner of the property for a short period of time before selling it to Andrew Peterson in 1884 (WD PCC 1884: DB 30/629). Andrew Peterson was born in Norway, and immigrated to the United States as an infant in 1856. His family was part of the significant 1836-1935 Norwegian immigration to the United States which Wisconsin served as a principle destination. By 1880, Peterson had established himself as a lumber manufacturer in Ellsworth; Lumbering was an established and substantial industry of the region by that time. Peterson married Lena in 1883. Sixteen of the original acres associated with the house were sold by Davis to Lena in 1887 (WD PCC 1887: DB 40/333). An 1896 map, names A. Peterson is the owner of the parcel, and dwelling is also illustrated on the property owned by A. Peterson on a 1908 map.

Peterson family ownership continues and is verified on 1917, 1922, and 1930 maps. Andrew Peterson died in 1906, and Lena in 1932. The property was willed to children and grandchildren; including Alma J. and Ruth E. Peterson, who remained residents of the home, and eventually were sold the other interests of the property (Certificate of Descent of Real Estate PCC 1932: D/521; et al). The 1959 atlas of the township depicts the parcel still contained thirteen acres. The property is currently considerably smaller at approximately .33 acres.

Alma passed away in 1975 and Ruth in 1989. At that time, Robert and Lucy Strom purchased the parcel as a rental property (Certificate of Termination of Joint Tenancy, PCC 1975: DB 81/404; Personal Representative#25;s Deed PCC 1989: DB 233/52; Rental PCC Rental Unit Energy Efficiency Standards Stipulation 231/54). Since then, ownership of the house has changed hands several times. As of 2008, Shaun S. and Alicia F. Olsberg have been the property owners (WD PCC 2008 DB 507953). The parcel is not located within a platted area of the village.

2009- "The ca. 1870 Queen Anne style house, situated on the southwest comer of South Piety and Woodworth streets, possesses a rectilinear footprint which parallels South Piety Street. The building rests on a fieldstone foundation, is sheathed in clapboards, and is roofed with asphalt shingles. The main part of the house is two stories and cross-gabled with a one-story wing to the south. Entrances can be found on the east-facing (front) facade and the west-facing (rear) elevation. A square bay window is centered on the east-facing (front) facade. Decorative elements include gable ornamentation, a spindled frieze on the wing's porch, and prominent lintels. Several large mature trees are present on the property, in close proximity to South Piety Street. A noncontributing, front-gabled garage is located to the south of the house. It is vinyl sided and roofed with asphalt shingles."

2010- "The Kinne/Peterson House occupies the southwest comer of the South Piety Street/Woodworth Street intersection. Situated in a primarily residential area of Ellsworth southeast of the downtown, it is oriented parallel to and faces South Piety Street, a wide north-south transportation artery of the village. The house sits on approximately 0.33 acre (ac) (0.13 hectare [ha]), and is surrounded on the east, north, and to a lesser degree the west, by mature trees. A modest modem residence is located on the lot to the south.

The Kinne/Peterson House stands two stories and is topped by a cross-gabled roof with a dominate north-south axis. The house can best be described as a Queen Anne style residence with a Gabled Ell cruciform footprint. The Queen Anne stylistic elements are early form and decorative additions. The entire house rests on a fieldstone foundation and is sheathed in clapboards. The somewhat steeply pitched roof is covered with asphalt shingles. Dominant front-facing gables with cove-shingle imbrication, moldings, overhanging eaves, bargeboards, and paired square transoms are located throughout the house, as are square-head windows with one-over-one double-hung replacements, prominent lintels, and boxed window surrounds.

The east-facing facade comprises the northeast corner of the ell and a one and one-half story gabled wing section. A square bay window with a flat, mansard roof delineates the face of the ell. The bay is hip-roofed with decorative wood panels below the windows.

In the ell, a short flight of concrete steps with wrought iron rails rises to an open entry porch and a replaced door. The one and one-half-story gabled wing section displays overhanging eaves, and more prominently, an open porch extending the full width of the wing. The porch features a decorative spindlework frieze and is supported by turned posts. The porch has a replaced deck, steps, and front door.

The north-facing elevation comprises several two-story projecting cross-gabled sections. A hooded single-paned bowed glass window with a small pent-roof awning delineates the elevation.

The west facing (rear) elevation also comprises several two-story, projecting cross-gabled sections, in addition to a smaller one-story shed-roofed section. The latter retains a single square transom. A door (replacement) allows interior access. A significant alteration has been the addition of a modern wood deck, which extends to part of the south-facing elevation.

The south-facing elevation comprises the one and one-half-story wing, described previously, as well as the modern wood deck addition.

The non-contributing garage appears to date to ca. 1980. It is front-gabled, finished with vinyl siding, and rests on a concrete slab. The gable roof is clad with asphalt shingles.

The garage faces east.

Exterior Alterations
The alterations to the Kinne/Peterson House, although not extensive, have nonetheless resulted in diminished integrity of materials, design, setting, and feeling. On the exterior, the majority of the windows are replacements, and few original openings remain. All doors also appear to be replacements, particularly the main entrance on the east-facing facade. Also on the east-facing fa<;ade, it appears that a porch, located in the ell, has been removed and replaced with a modern concrete deck porch and steps. The wrought iron railings leading up to the porch appear to date from the 1950s. A second porch located on the one and one-half-story wing (on the same facade) has a replaced deck and steps, and ca. 1950s wrought iron railings. The size of a rear second-story window appears to have been reduced, and a large rear deck encompasses the west-facing elevation and wraps to the south-facing elevation. The setting of the property has been altered by the construction of a ca. 1980s garage."
